Texas Almond Tree: A Classic of Provence

The Texas almond tree is an old and very productive variety, native to the Provence region. This fruit tree is renowned for its robustness and its ability to produce quality almonds, even in harsh climatic conditions. Ideal for orchards or isolated planting, Texas Almond is a smart choice for those looking for a bountiful harvest and minimal maintenance.

Characteristics of the fruit

Texas almonds are medium-sized, encased in a soft shell, and have excellent white flesh. Their flavour is balanced with a slight sweetness and a touch of bitterness that characterises the best almonds. The fruit is harvested from September to October, offering a generous harvest for use in cooking or to be eaten directly.

Growing conditions

The Texas almond tree is a hardy tree that can grow to a height of 4 to 6 meters at maturity. It adapts well to different types of soil, even limestone, and prefers full sun exposure. This tree is able to withstand temperatures down to -20ยฐC, making it an excellent choice for various climates. Although self-fertile, it is recommended to plant another almond tree nearby, such as the ‘Princess’ variety, to maximize production.

Planting and maintenance

Plant Texas almond in well-drained soil, preferably in the fall or spring, to ensure a good recovery. The tree requires regular watering during the first year to promote solid rooting. Minimal maintenance is required, with light pruning in late winter to remove dead wood and maintain a harmonious shape.

Culinary Use

Texas almond kernels are perfect for a variety of culinary preparations. They can be eaten as is or used in a variety of recipes, ranging from pastries to savory dishes. Their rich taste and crunchy texture add a depth of flavor to all kinds of dishes.

Storage tips

Texas almonds keep well after harvest, especially if stored in a cool, dry place. They can be consumed over several months, ensuring a constant supply of this delicious fruit.

Pollination

Although the Texas almond tree is self-fertile, it is advisable to plant it near another variety, such as ‘Ferragnes‘, to ensure optimal pollination and an even more abundant harvest. Its early flowering, from the end of February to March, offers a first touch of spring in your orchard.
