Description

Api star apple tree

The Api star apple tree represents one of the most singular and decorative varieties of the European fruit heritage. This ancient Swiss variety from the sixteenth century fascinates with its unique fruits in the shape of a five-pointed star, creating a visual spectacle that leaves no one indifferent.

Once used to decorate Christmas tables thanks to its distinctive shape, this apple harmoniously combines aesthetic originality and taste qualities, perpetuating a centuries-old tradition in our modern orchards.

A unique shape in the world

Feature Description Advantage
Shape Flattened star with 5 lobes Unique decorative effect
Color Golden yellow tinged with pink Attractive presentation
Size Medium (6 cm diameter) Ideal serving size

The Api star apple is distinguished by its perfect geometric shape reminiscent of a well-marked five-pointed star. Its thin skin sports a beautiful golden yellow color that is tinged with brick red on the side exposed to the sun, creating a striking natural gradient.

Refreshing taste qualities

Beneath its spectacular appearance, the Api étoilé reveals a firm, remarkably crisp and juicy white flesh. Its well-balanced taste profile harmoniously combines sweetness and refreshing acidity, offering a delicate, unscented flavor that appeals to all palates.

This crunchy texture and moderate acidity make it a particularly refreshing apple, ideal for autumn and winter snacks or gourmet breaks.

Remarkable culinary versatility

The Michelin-starred Api excels in multiple culinary preparations:

  • Fresh consumption: Crunchy texture and balanced taste
  • Pastries: Holds up well when cooked, decorative effect guaranteed
  • Decoration: Star slices for spectacular presentation
  • Cooking: Firm flesh that retains its shape
  • Juice: Sweet and refreshing flavour
  • Festive tables: Traditional Christmas Decorative Element

Exceptional conservation

One of the major advantages of the Api étoilé lies in its remarkable conservation capacity. Harvested in November-December, just before the first frosts, these apples keep perfectly until May, offering fresh fruit for more than 5 months.

This long shelf life allows fresh apples to be enjoyed all winter and into spring, a period when few varieties still offer fruit of optimal quality.

Tree Features

The Api star apple tree develops a slightly weeping habit that gives it an elegant silhouette in the landscape. This vigorous and very fertile tree demonstrates regular and abundant productivity, rewarding the patient gardener.

Its early flowering in April-May offers delicate white flowers that announce the promise of extraordinary fruit. This very old variety has survived the centuries thanks to its robustness and its adaptation to temperate climates.

Cultivation and pollination

Star Api has excellent resistance to cold (down to -25°C) and to common diseases such as scab and mildew. This natural hardiness makes it much easier to maintain and makes it a preferred choice for organic gardens.

As this variety is not self-fertile, combine it with the Reine des Reinettes apple tree or the Reinette du Mans apple tree to guarantee optimal pollination and generous harvests.

Growing conditions

  • Aspect: Sun, avoid due south
  • Soil: Cool, deep, well-drained, low limestone
  • Hardiness: Excellent (-25°C)
  • Vigour: Medium to High
  • Fruit set: Fast and steady
  • Harvest: Late, before frost

A living heritage to be preserved

The starred Api apple tree perfectly embodies the richness of the ancient fruit heritage. This historic variety, passed down from generation to generation since the sixteenth century, represents a genetic and cultural treasure that must be preserved.

Planting a starred Api means participating in the preservation of fruit biodiversity while offering yourself the unique pleasure of harvesting apples with an extraordinary shape, true natural works of art that will amaze young and old alike.
