Created in 1943 by Cornell University in Geneva in the United States, this two-tone apple quickly conquered orchards around the world thanks to its remarkable taste qualities and impressive productivity.
Recognizable by its large golden-yellow apples streaked with orange-red, Jonagold offers an exceptional taste experience from the harvest. This vigorous and hardy variety produces generous, high-caliber fruit that is perfect for fresh consumption as well as baking. Its international success makes it one of the fifteen most cultivated varieties in the United States and the flagship variety of Belgium.
Jonagold apples are distinguished by their imposing size and exceptional taste quality. With a diameter of 7.5 to 8 cm, these large-sized fruits have an elegant conical shape covered with an attractive epidermis mixing bright yellow and streaked orange-red.

Jonagold is a non-self-fertile triploid variety that requires the presence of other apple trees to fruit. In addition, its pollen being of poor quality, it cannot pollinate other varieties. For optimal fruiting, combine it with the Reine des Reinettes AB apple tree, the Cox Orange AB apple tree or the Melrose AB apple tree.
Carry out training pruning during the first few years to structure the tree as it moves from an upright habit to a more spread habit with age. Annual maintenance pruning at the end of winter maintains the balance and avoids alternating production. Fruit setting is quick but thinning may be necessary to avoid overloading the branches.
Jonagold apples are harvested at the end of September to the beginning of October, at the same time as the Golden Delicious. The fruits reach their taste maturity quickly and can be eaten immediately after picking.
