The Alexandre Lucas Buttered Pear Tree, also known as ‘Beurré Alexandre Lucas’, is a variety of table pear discovered in 1870 near Blois. It was first marketed in 1874 by the Transon brothers of Orléans. This pear, prized for its preservation and rich flavour, has a greenish colour when picked that evolves towards an amber yellow when ripe.
The ‘Alexandre Lucas’ is a tree that is not self-fertile and requires pollinators for effective fruiting. Varieties such as ‘Beurré Hardy’, ‘Clapp’s Favorite’, ‘Comtesse de Paris’, and ‘William’s Bon Chrétien’ are recommended to ensure good cross-pollination.
Opting for the Alexandre Lucas Buttered pear tree is wise for pear lovers who appreciate a rich flavor and good shelf life. Its need for specific pollinators can be seen as an opportunity to diversify an orchard, thus improving the pollination of other varieties of pears and apple trees. Its rich history and flavor profile make it a great addition to any fruit garden or pomological collection.
