All about the White Transparent Apple Tree

The White Transparent Apple Tree, also known as Saint Jean, De Revel, and Yellow Transparent, is the first summer apple. Originally from Russia and introduced to France in 1852 by nurseryman André Leroy, this variety is particularly popular for being eaten freshly picked from mid-July to mid-August.

Characteristics of the fruit

The fruit of the White Transparent Apple tree is medium-sized (70 mm) and round-conical in shape, often slightly asymmetrical and bumpy. The epidermis is thin and smooth, green-yellow in color, becoming yellowish-white in the sun. The flesh is white, tender, juicy and slightly acidic, ideal for fresh consumption or for cooking.

Use of the fruit

The Transparent White is an excellent knife and baking apple. It is tart and refreshing, with a vitamin C content of 11.3 mg per 100 g of pulp. It is harvested from mid-July to mid-August and is preferably eaten immediately after harvesting.

Description of the White Transparent Apple Tree

The tree has low to medium vigour and thrives well when grafted onto rootstocks of similar vigour. It is well-balanced and suitable for all forms of cultivation, whether high-stem or low-stem.

Growing Characteristics

• Flowering: Early, with very good pollen. Self-fertile due to its tendency to parthenocarpy.
• Fertility: Strong, good pollinator for early-flowering varieties such as the Belle de Boskoop.
• Disease Susceptibility: Quite prone to scab, canker, moniliosis and aphids. In the Hauts-de-France, it is moderately sensitive to scab and very sensitive to powdery mildew.
