Description

Yellow Williams pear tree (Good Christian)

The Yellow Williams Pear Tree, also known as Bon Chrรฉtien Williams or Bartlett, is the most widely grown pear variety in the world. This legendary variety has a fascinating history dating back to the fifteenth century, linked to Saint Francis of Paola who gave King Louis XI a pear tree seed from his native Calabria.

This exceptional summer pear was the favourite of Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie, creator of the King’s Vegetable Garden in Versailles. Popularized in England by a gardener named Williams, it is now the standard of quality for summer pears all over the world.

Characteristics of the fruit

Williams Yellow pears are distinguished by their generous size (6 to 8 cm in diameter) and their characteristic colour which evolves from light green to bright golden yellow when ripe. Their classic pear-shaped shape and thin skin make them particularly attractive fruits.

The white, slightly yellowish flesh is remarkably fine and melting. Non-grainy, it develops an unmistakable juicy texture with a sweet flavour with a slight hint of acidity and characteristic musky aromas for which this strain is famous.

Exceptional taste qualities

The Williams Yellow Pear Tree is universally recognized for its impeccable taste qualities. Its flesh develops a perfect balance between natural sweetness and freshness, with intense fragrant notes and an incomparable melting texture.

๐Ÿ Remarkable versatility : This exceptional pear lends itself to all culinary uses. Excellent to chew, it can withstand cooking perfectly and can be beautifully transformed into compotes, jams, pies and sophisticated desserts.

Recommended Uses

  • Fresh tasting : The best summer pear to eat
  • Baking : Ideal for pies, clafoutis and desserts
  • Preserves : Perfect for jams and pears in syrup
  • Distillery : Used for the famous pear brandy

Cultivation and maintenance

The Williams Yellow Pear Tree is a vigorous and fertile tree that develops an elegant semi-erect pyramid-shaped habit. Its relatively strong vigour and rapid fruiting (production possible on one-year-old wood) make it an ideal choice for productive orchards.

This variety has excellent hardiness (resistant to -20ยฐC) and adapts to all climates, including growing at altitude. Its exceptional longevity can exceed 100 years under good conditions.

Cultural requirements

  • Exposure : Sun in partial shade, sheltered from cold winds
  • Soil : Prefers light, deep, cool and low limestone soils
  • Drainage : Avoid stagnant moisture
  • Amendment : Recommended addition of potash-rich wood ash

Pollination and associations

Williams Yellow Pear is partially self-fertile and parthenocarpic (can produce fruit without pollination). However, its fruiting is greatly improved by cross-pollination.

This variety is an excellent pollinator for most other pear trees (except Seckel). To optimize its production, combine it with the Pear Tree Conference or the Poirier Doyennรฉ du Comice.

โš ๏ธ Incompatibility : Clearly incompatible with the pollen of Louise Bonne d’Avranches.

Harvesting and storage

The harvest takes place from mid-August to mid-September depending on the region (earlier in the south). The fruits are ready when they have developed their beautiful golden yellow color and are easily detached from the tree.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Exceptional conservation : Picked at the right time, Williams pear can be kept perfectly until the end of October, either in a ventilated cellar or in the refrigerator. Its maturity evolves rapidly after taking it out of the fridge.

Storage tips

To prevent browning during preparation, drizzle with a little lemon juice. The Williams pear can withstand cooking perfectly and retains its taste qualities.

Disease resistance

The Williams Yellow pear tree has good overall resistance to disease. It can be susceptible to scab – in this case, prefer a sunny and well-ventilated exposure.

Its hardiness and ease of cultivation make it an ideal choice even for beginner gardeners.

Recognition and reputation

๐Ÿ† Exceptional references : This variety is used for the production of pear brandy in the Loiret (Poire d’Olivet) and in Switzerland (Williamine du Valais AOP). Some producers even create bottles containing a whole pear grown directly from the bottle.
