Description
Peach Nectarine Felligni
The Felligni nectarine is a historic Belgian variety obtained in the nineteenth century by Mr. Prรฉsin de Fรฉlignies at the Chรขteau de Neufvilles, near Soignies. Known for its exceptionally sweet and fragrant yellow flesh, this nectarine is distinguished by its remarkable resistance to diseases and its ability to adapt up to 1000 meters above sea level. A first-class variety, it offers fruits with a smooth dark red skin on an orange-yellow background.
Felligni Nectarine Characteristics
The fruits of the Felligni nectarine have a medium size with a smooth skin characteristic of nectarines, with a beautiful dark red color on a yellow background. The yellow flesh, firm and melting, is particularly juicy and aromatic, reminiscent of the authentic flavor of peach with a pronounced sweetness.
This variety stands out for its exceptional agronomic qualities:
- ๐ก๏ธ Highly resistant to blistering : one of the few nectarines with this characteristic
- โ๏ธ Excellent cold hardiness : suitable for harsher climates
- โฐ๏ธ Adaptation to altitude : can be grown up to 1000 m
- ๐ณ Very vigorous and productive tree
Cultivation and maintenance
The Felligni nectarine peach tree thrives in well-drained soils, whether deep and rich or less fertile. The tree adapts remarkably well to different types of soil depending on the rootstock chosen. Choose a sunny exposure sheltered from the prevailing winds to optimize production.
Choosing the rootstock
| ๐ฑ GF677 | Deep and rich soils, vigorous development |
| ๐ฟ Montclar | Less fertile soils, medium vigour |
| ๐ Rubira | Poor and calcareous soils, small size |
| ๐พ Saint-Julien | Clay and heavy soils |
The maintenance of Felligni nectarine remains simple thanks to its natural hardiness. Water regularly in the first few years, especially during the fruit growth period. Mulching at the foot will conserve moisture and limit weed competition.
Pruning and training
Like all peach trees, the Felligni nectarine requires regular pruning to maintain its productivity. Pruning is carried out at the end of winter (February-March) before flowering:
- Remove dead and intersecting branches
- Thin out the center of the tree to promote aeration
- Shorten the branches that have fruited the previous year
- Save vigorous seedlings for renewal
Apply a healing putty to large pruning wounds. Thanks to its very good resistance to blistering, preventive treatments are significantly reduced compared to other varieties.
Pollination and associations
Felligni nectarine is self-fertile, which means that a single tree is enough to obtain fruit. However, the presence of other varieties of peach or nectarine trees will improve fruiting. To optimize pollination, you can combine it with the Queen of the Orchard peach tree or the Grosse Mignonne peach tree.
To create a diversified orchard and stagger your harvests, also plant the Bergeron apricot tree for fruit in July, or the Reine Claude Dorรฉe plum tree to extend the season until September.
Harvesting and Use
Felligni nectarine is harvested in mid-August, when the fruit is well coloured and gives way slightly under finger pressure. The juicy and sweet flesh lends itself to multiple uses:
- ๐ Fresh consumption : ideal to chew to appreciate its authentic flavor
- ๐ฅ Fruit salads : adds a sweet and refreshing touch
- ๐ฅง Pastries: pies, clafoutis, soft cakes
- ๐ฏ Preserves : jams, compotes to prolong the pleasure
- ๐ฅค Juices and smoothies : healthy and vitamin-packed drinks
- ๐ Savoury dishes : goes well with white meats and mixed salads
Conservation
Felligni nectarines can be preserved:
- At room temperature: 2-3 days to complete maturation
- In the refrigerator: up to a week
- Frozen: cut into pieces for later use
Advantages of the variety
Felligni nectarine has many advantages that make it a preferred choice for amateur and professional gardeners:
