All about the Saule Marsault

The Marsault Willow, scientifically known as Salix caprea, is a hardy, melliferous tree, highly valued for its early flowering that provides a valuable source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects from the end of winter. Its silver catkins, which appear before the leaves, illuminate gardens and riverbanks.

The Marsault Willow is distinguished by its slightly hairy foliage and flexible branches. It is often used for its ornamental qualities in gardens or as a hedge tree.

Key features:

  • Adult size : The Marsault Willow can reach a height of 12 to 15 meters. It is possible to prune it into a “trogne” or “tadpole” to limit its growth and give it a more compact shape.
  • Foliage : Oval leaves, dark green on top, with a lighter, downy underside.
  • Flowering : Silver male catkins appear as early as January or February, offering a first food to pollinators after winter.
  • Soil and Exposure : Prefers deep, moist, well-drained soils, but adapts to a variety of soil conditions. It appreciates a sunny to partial shade exposure.
  • Hardiness : Very resistant to cold, the Marsault Willow is suitable for temperate climates.

Uses and maintenance:

  • Planting : Ideal in early autumn or spring. It is recommended to dig a hole of at least 60 cm in all directions and to water well after planting.
  • Maintenance : Regular watering is necessary in the first few years, especially in dry periods. Light pruning can be done to structure the tree or to encourage a bush shape.
  • Propagation : Easy to take cuttings, especially on semi-hardened wood at the end of summer or on hardwood in winter.

Additional information

The Marsault Willow is also recognized for its ecological qualities, playing a crucial role in riparian ecosystems. Its fast growth and adaptability make it an excellent choice for gardens that want to accommodate more biodiversity.
