Description
Description of the Pear Tree Joséphine de Mechelen
The Joséphine de Mechelen pear tree, a Belgian variety obtained in 1830 by Major Esperen in Mechelen, is named in honour of his wife, Joséphine. This pear is renowned for its exceptional quality after storage, with a flesh that becomes salmon-like, very fine, melting and juicy.
Growing Conditions
‘Joséphine de Mechelen’ has moderate vigour with naturally drooping branches. Although the variety shows limited growth and production when grafted onto quince, better performance is seen with intergraft. This pear is extremely hardy and has a very low susceptibility to scab, which makes it much easier to grow.
Benefits
- Excellent preservation: Ideal for extended consumption from December to February, after storage in the cellar.
- Rich Flavor: Its melting, sweet flesh after maturation is particularly popular during the winter months.
- Remarkable hardiness: Very little susceptibility to common diseases, especially scab.
Why choose the Joséphine de Mechelen pear tree?
Opting for the Joséphine de Mechelen pear tree is ideal for lovers of high-quality winter pears. Its ability to ripen well after harvest and its resistance to diseases make it a valuable choice for growers and gardeners, especially those interested in heirloom varieties with less phytosanitary care. It is a variety particularly suitable for gardens where space allows you to give free rein to its naturally drooping habit.
