Melrose Apple Tree – Malus domestica ‘Melrose’
The Melrose apple tree is a vigorous, productive and fast-fruiting variety. Obtained in the United States in 1944, it is the result of a cross between ‘Jonathan’ and ‘Golden Delicious’. This apple tree is one of our best apple varieties for its exceptional taste and versatility. Its fruits are large, round and flattened, measuring about 7.5 to 8 cm in diameter, with a shiny red skin on a very attractive yellow background. The white-yellow flesh is fine, crunchy, juicy, sweet and slightly acidic, offering an excellent taste balance.

Cultivation and maintenance
Planting
- Planting period: October to March (frost-free)
- Planting distance: 3 to 4 m between each tree
- Pollination: Not self-fertile, requires a pollinator
Care
- Regular watering, especially in times of drought
- Pruning in late winter (February-March) and thinning in summer
- Adding organic fertilizer in spring
- Good scab resistance, average monitoring for powdery mildew
Harvesting and storage
Melrose apple apples are harvested from the end of September to the beginning of October and can be stored until January or even April if stored in good conditions (cool and dry place). Their excellent shelf life makes them a popular strain for consumption over several months.
