Description
Pear Tree Doctor Jules Guyot
The Docteur Jules Guyot Pear Tree is a historic French variety obtained in 1870 by Ernest Baltet in Troyes. This summer pear is named after Doctor Jules Guyot (1807-1872), medical officer of health and eminent winegrower of the region, friend of the nurseryman who died just before the spread of the variety. ๐จโโ๏ธ
Until the appearance of modern pears such as Williams, this variety was the most planted pear tree in Europe and across the Atlantic. It remains a reference for early summer pears today.
Characteristics of the fruit
Docteur Jules Guyot pears are distinguished by their exceptional earliness and taste quality. These large-caliber fruits, sometimes pear-shaped and sometimes asymmetrical, have a finely punctate lemon-yellow skin, often pink when sunstroked.
| ๐ Caliber | ๐จ Color | ๐ฏ Texture |
| Medium to Large | Lemon yellow, pink in the sun | Fine, melting, juicy |
The ivory flesh is very fine, melting and juicy, with a subtly fragrant and slightly musky sweet taste, characteristic of pears of yesteryear. It is refreshing and aromatized.
Culture and adaptation
The Docteur Jules Guyot pear tree is a moderately vigorous but very productive tree, reaching 4 meters in height and 4.5 meters in wingspan. It has excellent resistance to scab and offers rapid fruiting.
This variety prefers warm and sunny exposures , ideally south of the Loire because it fears late spring frosts. It appreciates a filtering, cool, deep soil with little limestone.
๐ก๏ธ Climate requirements
Although its late flowering in April usually protects it from frosts, this variety prefers sunnier regions or sheltered situations in full sun. It is particularly suitable for mild to warm climates.
Pollination
The Docteur Jules Guyot pear tree is not self-fertile and requires the presence of pollinators. It pairs perfectly with the AB Conference Pear Tree, the Williams Yellow Pear Tree and the Hardy Buttered Pear Tree.
๐ Major advantage: This variety is itself an excellent pollinator for other pear trees, giving it a strategic place in an orchard.
Early harvest and consumption
The harvest takes place from the end of July to mid-August, making this variety one of the earliest. Pears ripen very quickly on the tree and tend to become stony.
โ ๏ธ Harvesting tips
It is recommended to harvest slightly immature fruits and let them finish ripening quietly at home. Pears are fragile, do not keep for long and should be eaten quickly.
