Description
Bonne de Brie plum tree
The Bonne de Brie plum tree, also called Belle de Paris, is an early French variety discovered around 1820 near Bry-sur-Marne. This old plum is one of the first harvests of the summer, offering tasty fruit to impatient gardeners from the beginning of July.
This variety is distinguished by its abundant and regular production from the first years of planting. The vigorous tree with a semi-spreading habit has excellent resistance to diseases, especially monilia, making it an ideal choice for organic gardens.
Characteristics of the fruit
Bonne de Brie plums are small in size (about 20 grams), globular in shape and slightly flattened. Their purplish-blue, slightly pruinous skin protects a greenish-yellow, fine and sweet flesh. The pit is adherent to the flesh.
The flavor is mild and sweet with little acidity, making it a particularly popular plum for children. The texture is firm and medium-juicy, with a delicate but present fragrance.
Culinary Use
This plum excels in fresh consumption thanks to its natural sweetness. It is also perfect for jam, where its sweet taste reduces the need for added sugar. On the other hand, it is not recommended for pastry where its tender flesh may disintegrate when cooked.
Pollination and associations
โ ๏ธ The Bonne de Brie is self-sterile and requires the presence of other plum trees to ensure pollination. For optimal fruiting, combine it with the Queen Claude Dorรฉe plum tree or the Victoria plum tree.
Cultivation and maintenance
The Bonne de Brie plum tree adapts to all types of well-drained soils and tolerates various exposures, although it prefers full sun. Its hardiness allows it to withstand temperatures down to -15ยฐC, but beware of late frosts which can compromise early flowering.
The tree enters production quickly and does not require any special pruning. Thinning the fruit can be beneficial in years of high production to avoid alternation.

Planting Tips
Plant your Bonne de Brie plum tree in the fall or spring in well-drained soil. Keep a distance of 4 to 5 metres from other trees to allow for good development. Mulching around the foot will promote moisture retention and limit weed competition.
