Most European pear varieties (Pyrus communis) are not fully self-fertile and produce significantly better crops when cross-pollinated by a different variety that flowers at the same time. A few cultivars like Conference are partially self-fertile and can set some fruit alone, but yields are always improved with a partner. We recommend planting at least two different varieties within 15–30 metres of each other. If space is limited, a neighbour’s pear tree or even a nearby ornamental pear can sometimes serve as a pollinator.
On dwarfing Quince BA29 rootstock, pear trees typically begin bearing fruit within 3–4 years of planting. On Pyrodwarf, expect first fruits in 4–5 years. On seedling rootstock, trees may take 5–7 years but will then produce abundantly for many decades. Our trees are sold as 1-year grafted whips (scions) that establish quickly and can be trained into any desired form — bush, espalier, cordon, or free-standing standard.
It depends on your space and goals. Quince BA29 produces a compact tree (≈3m) that fruits early — ideal for small gardens, espaliers, and containers. Pyrodwarf gives a medium tree (≈4m) that handles a wider range of soils, perfect for most home orchards. Seedling (Franc) produces a large, long-lived tree (5m+) best suited to meadow orchards and agroforestry. Quince rootstocks require more fertile soil but reward you with earlier harvests; seedling rootstock is tougher and more drought-tolerant.
Bare-root pear trees should be planted during their dormant season, from November through to March. The ideal window is late autumn to early winter, allowing roots to settle in before spring growth. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Dig a hole wide enough for the roots to spread comfortably, position the graft union 5–10 cm above soil level, backfill with your native soil (adding compost if poor), and water deeply. A mulch ring around the base will conserve moisture through the first growing season.
Pear trees thrive in full sun (minimum 6 hours daily) with well-drained, reasonably fertile soil. They tolerate a wide range of soil types — clay, loam, sandy — but will not tolerate waterlogged ground. A sheltered spot protects early spring blossom from late frosts and wind. European pear varieties are hardy across most of Europe (USDA zones 4–9). Water regularly during the first two summers to establish deep roots. After that, established trees are relatively low-maintenance and naturally suited to organic growing.
