The Marcona almond tree is an old Spanish variety, very productive and uncommon. Its production is high and its flowering is late for an almond tree. It is distinguished by an early harvest, making it one of the earliest varieties, like the Avijor. This almond tree is also self-fertile, making it much easier to grow.
This variety requires a warm situation and draining, non-suffocating soil. The Marcona almond tree is able to withstand down to -15°C when properly established, making it suitable for various climates.
The Marcona almond tree belongs to the Rosaceae family and is native to Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Also known as Prunus amygdalus Lauranne, it produces white to pinkish flowers and has deciduous foliage. Once adult, it can reach a height of 3 to 4 meters.
It flowers in March, depending on the region and the exposure. The harvest months extend from July to September, depending on the region and the method of cultivation. The ideal exposure is in full sun, and it prefers draining soil, even rocky.
The Marcona almond tree is resistant to diseases, pests and parasites, as long as excess water is avoided. Planting is advised in autumn or winter, and pruning should be done after harvest. Rather easy to grow, it is well suited to Mediterranean and sub-tropical gardens, and orchards.
