Description
Apple tree Red Hare’s snout
The Red Hare’s Apple Snout is an old and hardy variety, appreciated for its distinctive fruits and good storage capacity. Native to the South-West of France, particularly Bรฉarn, this apple can be recognized by its elongated and conical shape, reminiscent of a hare’s snout, and by its intense red coloring which makes it very decorative. It is a vigorous tree, known for its regular productivity and good adaptation to various climates, including at altitudes up to 800 meters.
Fruit and tree characteristics
The fruit of the Red Hare’s Muzzle apple tree is medium to large in size. Its skin is smooth and shiny, a luminous scarlet red, often streaked. The flesh is white, fine, crunchy, juicy and offers a harmonious balance between sugar and a slight acidity, accompanied by a delicate and fruity fragrance. This apple is versatile: excellent to eat, it also lends itself very well to baking for pies, compotes and juices.
The tree is of medium to strong vigor, with a semi-erect habit. It is generally not very susceptible to common diseases such as scab and powdery mildew, making it an attractive choice for a crop with limited treatments. Its fruit setting is rapid, and its mid-late flowering (April) protects it from late spring frosts, thus ensuring a reliable harvest.
Taste and uses
- Texture: Crunchy and juicy.
- Flavour: Balanced, sweet with a hint of acidity, very fragrant.
- Uses: Ideal for fresh consumption, but also excellent for juices, compotes and pastries.
Cultivation and care of the Red Hare’s Apple Snout
The Red Hare’s Mare apple tree prefers deep, well-drained and fertile soil. A sunny exposure promotes better fruit colouring and optimal flavour. Planting can be done in the fall or early spring. Regular watering is recommended during the first few years and during periods of summer drought.
Training pruning is essential in the first few years to structure the tree. Afterwards, annual maintenance pruning in winter will maintain the fruiting and vigour of the tree. Because this variety is self-fertile, it can fruit on its own, but the presence of other apple varieties with similar blooms will improve pollination and production.
For optimal pollination, combine it with the Reine des Reinettes Apple Tree or the Golden Delicious Apple Tree.
Strength and adaptability
The Red Hare Muzzle Apple is known for its good overall resistance to diseases and pests, including scab and powdery mildew, making it suitable for organic or low-input cultivation. Its hardiness allows it to withstand harsh winter temperatures and a wide range of soils. It is an excellent choice for home gardens and orchards, even in areas with harsher climates.
