All about the Apple Tree Winter Wand
The Baguette d’hiver apple tree is a very hardy variety, typical of the Avesnois-Thiรฉrache, where it is frequently found. It is valued for its pollinating qualities and resistance to disease.
Characteristics of the fruit
The fruit is medium-sized (60-80 mm), with a round, flat shape. The epidermis is smooth and green-yellow in color, often washed with dark red on part of the surface. The flesh is white, juicy, with a taste balanced between acidity and sugar, and a strong aroma. The fruit is not very floury and retains its firmness for a long time.
Use of the fruit
The Winter Wand is versatile and can be eaten at the table, used for juice or for cider. It is harvested at the end of September and keeps well until February.

The Baguette d’hiver apple tree has a medium vigour with a wide, drooping habit. It is well suited for high-stem and low-stem shapes, making it versatile for different types of orchards.
Growing Characteristics
- Flowering: Very late, 26 days after the Golden, one of the latest in the CRRG collection.
- Fertility: Very good pollinator for very late-flowering varieties such as the Reinette de France.
- Disease Susceptibility: Excellent vegetation quality, very little susceptible to scab and powdery mildew.

The Winter Baguette is a very hardy variety and widespread in the orchards of Avesnois-Thiรฉrache. It is well documented in the pomological literature, notably by Leroux in 1902 and by Vezin and Vandamme in 1938.
