Description

Boskoop Red Apple Tree

The Boskoop Red Apple Tree is a colourful selection of the famous Belle de Boskoop, an old variety from the Netherlands. This apple is distinguished by its beautiful dark red colouring on a yellow background and its particularly tart and fragrant flesh. Rustic and productive, it is appreciated both for fresh consumption and for cooking.

This triploid variety inherited from the Belle de Boskoop retains all the taste qualities of its mother variety while offering a more attractive presentation thanks to its intense red coloration. It is one of the apples with character, prized by lovers of authentic flavors.

Characteristics of the Boskoop Red Apple Tree

🍎 Characteristics of the fruit

Boskoop Rouge apples are large in size (about 170g) with a yellow, fine and firm flesh. Their flavor is remarkably tart and fragrant, with a hint of sugar that balances the whole. The smooth to slightly rough epidermis has a beautiful dark red colour on a yellow background.

The slightly grainy texture of the flesh gives this apple a unique personality. Its richness in vitamin C (more than double that of a Golden Delicious) makes it a particularly nutritious fruit.

🌳 Tree Features

The Boskoop Red apple tree is a very vigorous tree with a spreading habit and strong carpenters. It reaches 4 metres in height and 6 metres in width at maturity. Its early flowering in April precedes that of Golden Delicious by about 7 days.

This variety has a very high productivity which can cause alternation. It adapts to all types of rootstocks and grows particularly well on wet soils.

Pollination and compatible varieties

⚠️ Warning: As the Red Boskoop is a triploid variety, it produces poor quality pollen and requires the planting of a compatible pollinator variety.

For optimal pollination, pair it with the Queen of the Reinettes, the Golden Delicious or the Cox Orange. These varieties flower at the same time and guarantee abundant fruiting.

Culinary Use

The Boskoop Red Apple Tree excels in all culinary preparations. Its firm flesh is perfectly resistant to cooking, making it an ideal choice for:

  • 🥧 Apple pies and pastries
  • 🍯 Compotes and jams
  • 🥤 Tangy apple juice
  • 🍎 Fresh consumption

Its high acidity makes it the main ingredient in the traditional rombosse recipe. It is also excellent in crumbles and doughnuts.

Cultivation and maintenance

🌱 Planting

Plant your Boskoop Red Apple tree in a sunny position, in deep, cool soil. It tolerates clay and slightly calcareous soils. Planting is preferably done between October and March, except during frost periods.

Provide a spacing of at least 6 metres between trees to allow for good development. Don’t forget to install a sturdy stake when planting.

🌿 Care

Water generously at planting and regularly in the first year. At the end of winter, bring compost or well-rotted manure to the foot of the tree.

Annual pruning at the end of winter helps maintain a balanced and airy shape. Remove dead, diseased or cross-growing branches. Thin out in May if the tree is very loaded.

Disease resistance

⚠️ The Boskoop Red apple tree has a marked sensitivity to scab on leaves and fruit, as well as to powdery mildew. Regular monitoring is recommended.

Recommended preventions:

  • Picking up dead leaves in the fall
  • Ensure good ventilation between branches
  • Preventive treatment with Bordeaux mixture if necessary

Harvesting and storage

The harvest takes place in mid-October. The fruits reach full gustatory maturity in December and can be stored until March in good conditions (3-4°C with sufficient humidity).

This excellent storage capacity allows these apples to be enjoyed for several months, making the Red Boskoop an ideal choice for winter apple lovers.
