Description
Pear tree Buttered Giffard
The Beurrรฉ Giffard Pear Tree is an old French variety discovered by chance in 1825 by Nicolas Giffard, a farmer near Angers. This early summer pear is recognized as one of the best early varieties for its exceptional taste quality.
Appreciated by gourmets, this productive variety offers medium-sized fruits with particularly tender flesh. Its remarkable earliness makes it the first pear of the season to be tasted, at the end of July.
Characteristics of the fruit
The Beurrรฉ Giffard pear is distinguished by its slightly bellied pear-shaped shape and its medium size. Its thin and smooth skin has a pale yellow color punctuated by small brown dots, with delicious pink reflections on the sunny side.
The white flesh, very fine and melting, offers an exceptionally juicy texture that literally melts in the mouth. Its delicate taste reveals a sweet and delicately perfumed flavor, pleasantly acidic with a very slight harshness that makes all its charm.
Tree Features
The Beurrรฉ Giffard pear tree has a medium to good vigour with a characteristic semi-erect habit. It reaches 3 to 4 metres in height and a wingspan of 2 to 3 metres, forming a fairly open group with its long, divergent and twisted dark red branches.
This variety is remarkably hardy (resistant to -25ยฐC) and adapts to all climates, even in the mountains up to 1000m altitude. However, its early flowering in April requires special attention to late frosts and fog.
| Advantage | Detail | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| ๐๏ธ Altitude | Cultivation possible up to 1000m | Mountain adaptability |
| โฐ Precocity | First pear of the year | Harvest from the end of July |
| ๐ง Juiciness | Very juicy | Ideal for summer juices |
Pollination and fruiting
The Beurrรฉ Giffard pear tree is self-sterile and absolutely requires the presence of compatible pollinators to ensure good fruiting. Its early flowering requires simultaneous-flowering strains.
For optimal pollination, pair it with the Williams pear tree, the Docteur Jules Guyot pear tree, the Louise Bonne pear tree or the Hardy buttered pear tree. These early varieties guarantee excellent cross-pollination.
โ ๏ธ Important note: Fruit setting is moderately long (especially on francs), but productivity then becomes satisfactory and regular.
Harvesting and storage
๐ The harvest takes place from the end of July to the beginning of August, making this variety the first pear of the year to be tasted. The harvest is spread over 3 to 5 weeks depending on the weather conditions.
Like all early varieties, Beurrรฉ Giffard pears have a limited shelf life of about 1 month in good conditions. It is essential to pick the fruit slightly before full maturity and to eat it as it matures.
๐ก Tasting advice: These pears are ideally eaten fresh, directly under the tree, to fully appreciate their melting texture and summer freshness.
Cultivation and maintenance
๐ฑ The Beurrรฉ Giffard pear tree thrives in a sunny and warm exposure (preferably in the south), in fertile, light and cool soil. He fears soils that are too filtering and calcareous, as well as exposures that are too wet.
This variety grafts perfectly on quince or franc depending on the desired shape. Its pyramidal habit is well suited to high (on stem), low (goblet) or trellised (glass palmette) shapes.
Cultivation requirements
- Soil: Fertile, light, cool and deep – avoid calcareous soils
- Exhibition: Sunny, preferably warm (south)
- Planting: Fall (November to March) for bare roots
- Protection: Beware of late frosts on flowers (-2ยฐC destructive)
- Watering: Regular, especially in dry summer
Disease resistance
๐ก๏ธ The Giffard Butter has a variable resistance depending on the conditions:
- Scab: Quite sensitive – preventive treatment recommended
- Hardiness: Excellent resistance to cold (-25ยฐC)
- Late frosts: Flowers sensitive to light frosts and fogs
- Productivity: Satisfactory after implementation
โ ๏ธ Points of vigilance: Its early flowering requires protection against late frosts. Thinning the fruit improves its quality.
