All about the Cherry Tree Bigarreau de Mai

The Bigarreau de Mai cherry is an exceptional old variety from Gironde (Entre-deux-mers). Its main characteristic is its remarkable earliness, which allows it to produce delicious fruit from mid-May, well before most other varieties. This balanced cherry will delight cherry lovers eager to taste the first fruits of the season.

Characteristics of the Cherry Tree Bigarreau de Mai

This cherry tree is distinguished by a very spreading habit and good vigour, which can reach 6 to 8 meters in height when ripe. Its semi-early flowering produces delicate white or slightly pink flowers that add an extra ornamental touch to the garden.

The fruits of the Bigarreau de Mai are medium-sized, displaying a beautiful light red to reddish-brown colour, without ever reaching black even when fully ripe. The flesh, garnet-red, is semi-firm and stringy, typical of cherries. The pit is small and elongated. These cherries offer a sweet and slightly tart flavor, perfectly balanced, with a delicate fragrance that makes them a perfect table fruit.

Cultivation and maintenance

The Birard de Mai cherry adapts well to different types of soil, as long as they are well-drained. Like all cherry trees, it fears land that is too wet, which encourages diseases and root asphyxiation. Prefer a sunny exposure to promote the ripening of the fruit.

This variety benefits from cross-pollination. To optimize its production, it is recommended to combine it with other semi-early flowering varieties such as the Burlat Cherry or the Early Rivers Cherry.

Culinary Uses

Bigarreau de Mai cherries are perfect for fresh consumption thanks to their juicy and sweet flesh. They also lend themselves well to culinary preparations such as jams, clafoutis or desserts. Their exceptional earliness will allow you to enjoy the first cherries of the season well before the other varieties.

History and heritage

A traditional variety from the South-West of France, the Bigarreau de Mai is part of the Aquitaine fruit heritage. Its cultivation contributes to the preservation of genetic diversity and traditional flavours. By choosing this old variety, you are helping to safeguard a unique taste heritage and you are enjoying the advantages of a tree adapted to its terroir of origin.
