Description

Pear Tree Buttered Hardy

The Hardy Buttered Pear Tree is a classic and renowned French variety, created around 1820 by Mr. Bonnet in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Named in homage to Mr. Hardy, director of the gardens of the King of Belgium, this early autumn pear quickly established itself throughout the world.

Recognized as one of the first autumn pears to be harvested, this hardy and productive variety is unanimously appreciated for its exceptional taste qualities and remarkable resistance.

Characteristics of the fruit

The Beurrรฉ Hardy pear is distinguished by its slightly asymmetrical pear-shaped shape and medium to large size. Its rough skin has a characteristic tan green color on a yellow-green background, with beautiful reddish reflections on the sunny side.

The white flesh, fine and melting, offers an exceptionally juicy texture. Its delicate taste reveals a very sweet flavor with a slightly musky and powerful fragrance that has made its worldwide reputation. This exceptional pear provides an incomparable cooling power.

Tree Features

The Hardy Buttered pear tree has good vigour with strong, poorly branched scaffolds. It reaches 5 to 8 meters in height, with an erect habit at the top that spreads slightly at the base. Its growth is normal to rapid.

This variety is remarkably hardy (resistant to -20ยฐC) and adapts to all climates, even in the mountains up to 800m above sea level. Its mid-late flowering in April resists late frosts well, guaranteeing regular fruiting.

Pollination and fruiting

The Hardy Buttered Pear is partially self-fertile, but its production will be significantly improved by the presence of compatible pollinators. In fruit growing, this variety is often used as a grafting intermediate thanks to its excellent affinity with all rootstocks.

For optimal pollination, combine it with the Williams pear tree, the Conference pear tree, the Doyennรฉ du Comice pear tree or the Docteur Jules Guyot pear tree.

โš ๏ธ Important note: Fruit setting can be slow in the first few years due to its high vitality, but productivity then becomes good and steady.

Harvesting and storage

๐Ÿ‚ Harvesting is done from early to mid-September (usually September 5-20), making it one of the earliest fall pears. The fruits reach maturity in groups.

Hardy Buttered pears keep remarkably well for 2 to 3 months in good storage conditions. Place them in the refrigerator in the fruit drawer to optimize their preservation.

๐Ÿ’ก Harvesting tip: Harvest when pears come easily by making a quarter turn with the stem, without waiting for them to fall naturally.

Cultivation and maintenance

๐ŸŒฑ The Hardy Buttered pear tree thrives in sunny exposure in deep, well-drained and slightly calcareous soil. Absolutely avoid dry and calcareous soils, as well as waterlogged soils.

This variety adapts perfectly to all shapes: high stem, half stem, cord, espalier or pyramid. It is particularly suitable for trellised shapes and small gardens.

Cultivation requirements

  • Soil: Loose, light, cool and fertile – avoid soil that is too dry or too strong
  • Exhibition: Sun in partial shade, all exposures accepted
  • Planting: Autumn (November to March) to promote rooting
  • Size: Normal size in late winter to maintain a balanced shape
  • Watering: Regular for the first year, then as needed

Disease resistance

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ The Hardy Butter has good overall resistance to diseases, including:

  • Scab: Not very sensitive (variety recommended for intensive cultivation)
  • Hardiness: Excellent resistance to cold (-20ยฐC)
  • Late frosts: Protective mid-late flowering

โš ๏ธ Points of caution: Moderate sensitivity to psyllid and fire blight. Fruits can be sensitive to handling.

Culinary Uses
