All about the James Grieve apple tree

The James Grieve apple tree is an English variety obtained by Mr. James Grieve from a seedling of Pott’s Seedling and introduced into the market by the Dickson house in Edinburgh in 1890. It is a very common variety in Hauts-de-France and Wallonia.

Characteristics of the fruit

The fruit is medium to large in size (60-80 mm), with a round, conical shape, slightly ribbed around the calyx. The epidermis is smooth, green-yellow in colour with orange or crimson pink hues, often slightly stained with grey around the stem and eye cavities. The flesh is white, medium-firm, juicy, with a sweet and pleasantly tart taste.

Use of the fruit

The James Grieve is an excellent table apple, especially popular in summer. It is harvested during the second half of August and is ideally eaten until the end of September. However, it does not keep for long and is sensitive to shocks.

Description of James Grieve Apple Tree

The tree has moderate to low vigour, with a semi-erect and well-balanced habit. The branches are stiff and the leaves are small and dark green.

Growing Characteristics

• Flowering: Mid-late, with prolonged flowering. Good pollen, but self-sterile.
• Disease Susceptibility: Generally resistant, but quite susceptible to canker.
• Driving: Easy to grow.
