Description
Jupiter Vine
Jupiter vine (also called Jupiter Seedless or Arkansas 1985) is a seedless table grape variety of American origin, created in 1998 by the University of Arkansas. Resulting from a cross between Arkansas 1258 and Arkansas 1672, this revolutionary variety combines the qualities of Vitis vinifera and Vitis labrusca.
Highly renowned in Canada, the United States and Eastern Europe, the Jupiter is beginning to conquer French gardens thanks to its exceptional qualities. This seedless variety produces grapes with a strong muscat flavour, perfect for hobby and passionate gardeners.
Characteristics of the Jupiter Vine
๐ Fruit and production
The Jupiter vine produces medium-sized bunches weighing between 200 and 500 grams. The oval berries are remarkably large for a seedless grape, weighing 4 to 5 grams each. The maturation process offers a unique decorative spectacle.
| Color evolution | Berry | Taste |
| Pink โ Red โ Dark | 4-5g (large) | Muscat notes Isabella |
๐จ Exceptional decorative character
The Jupiter is distinguished by its remarkable ornamental appearance. At the ripening stage, the same bunch simultaneously presents different shades: light pink, rich crimson and dark blue. This particularity makes it a privileged choice for decorating pergolas, arbours and garden paths.
โฐ Remarkable precocity
With a vegetation period of only 105 to 120 days, Jupiter is among the earliest varieties. Flowering occurs very early in spring, and harvesting can begin as early as late July, well before most other varieties.
Resistance and hardiness
โ๏ธ Excellent hardiness
The Jupiter vine has a resistance to cold down to -29ยฐC with a light shelter, allowing it to be grown in difficult climatic zones. This remarkable hardiness makes it a variety of choice for northern regions.
๐ก๏ธ Disease resistance
Jupiter has a good natural resistance to the main vine diseases:
- ๐ฆ Powdery mildew : high natural resistance
- ๐ Downy mildew : good tolerance
- ๐ Phylloxera : graft resistance
- ๐ Wasps : dense protective skin
Cultivation and maintenance
๐ฑ Planting and soil
The Jupiter vine adapts easily to different types of soils, including well-drained clay soils. Choose a sunny exposure to optimise ripening and fully develop the muscat aromas.
โก Exceptional production
This variety is characterized by its phenomenal productivity. On young plants, it is even recommended to remove certain bunches to avoid depletion of the vine. A mature plant can bear up to 40 eyes and produce up to 5 kg of grapes.
๐ง Water requirements
Jupiter appreciates regular watering, especially during dry periods. Allow about 15 litres of water every three days during the growing period, stopping watering two weeks before harvest.
