Description
Lot-et-Garonne Blood Peach
Originally from the Lot-et-Garonne, this old peach tree is one of the so-called “vinous” or sanguine varieties. The Sanguine du Lot-et-Garonne is an intensely marbled, juicy, fragrant red-fleshed peach with a slightly acidic flavour sometimes reminiscent of grapes or wine. It is a rare variety and sought after for its originality and aromatic richness.
Characteristics of the variety
The fruit is of fairly high size, oblong in shape, with a very wide and deeply carved stem basin. The epidermis is velvety, dark red when ripe. Its red flesh marbled with white streaks is very juicy, sweet, low in acidity, with an excellent taste quality, both fresh and in the kitchen.
The nucleus is free, elongated in shape, slightly adherent, deeply striated.
Cultivation and maintenance
The Lot-et-Garonne Sanguine peach tree is of medium vigour, with an erect and very branched habit. It mainly fruits on May bouquets and stocky chiffons (short branches). Its flowering is quite late (end of March), which allows it to avoid late winter frosts.
Its hardiness is average : it is preferable to install it in a sunny area, well sheltered from the wind, in drained soil. Annual pruning at the end of winter is recommended to promote aeration of the tree and improve production.
