All about Nashi Kosui
The Nashi Kosui is a popular variety of Asian pear, also known as the apple pear because of its round shape and crunchy flesh. Originally from Japan, this fruit tree is appreciated for its large, juicy and sweet fruits, which are bronze in colour when ripe.
Description of Fruits
The fruits of the Nashi Kosui are round and medium to large in size, with a thin, rough skin that is bronze-colored. Their flesh is white, crunchy, juicy and very sweet, with a delicate scent of rose water. Unlike other pears, the texture of nashi remains firm even when fully ripe.
Benefits and Uses
- Culinary Use: Nashi Kosui is versatile and can be eaten fresh, used in desserts, jams, or fruit salads. It goes well with savory ingredients such as cheese or foie gras, and can also be cooked to accompany meat dishes.
- Storage: Fruits can be stored for up to three months in the fridge, making them a convenient choice for extended consumption after harvest.
Planting and Care Tips
- Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils.
- Exposure: Sun or partial shade, in a place sheltered from the wind.
- Watering: Regular, especially during the first few years after planting to keep the soil cool.
- Pollination: Not self-fertile, Nashi ‘Kosui’ requires another pear tree or another variety of nashi nearby for good pollination. The William’s and Shinseiki varieties are good pollinators.
