Description

Nashi Shinseiki

The Nashi Shinseiki, whose name means “New Century” in Japanese, is an iconic variety of Asian pear tree (Pyrus pyrifolia). Introduced in Japan in 1945, this variety quickly established itself as one of the most cultivated thanks to its exceptional taste qualities and remarkable productivity. This unique fruit, often called apple-pear, combines the crunch of an apple with the juicy sweetness of a pear, offering a refreshing and original taste experience that is increasingly appealing to fruit lovers in France.

Features of Nashi Shinseiki

The fruits of Nashi Shinseiki are distinguished by their round, slightly flattened shape and smooth, yellow-green to golden-yellow skin when ripe, dotted with characteristic white lenticels. Medium to large in size (200 to 250g), they contain white , crunchy and exceptionally juicy flesh. The fruit’s unique texture, both firm and melting, releases abundant juice in each bite, providing an incomparable sensation of freshness.

This variety is particularly appreciated for its delicately sweet flavour, balanced by a slight hint of acidity that makes it a thirst-quenching fruit par excellence. The tree itself has a very ornamental slightly weeping habit, reaching 3 to 4 meters in height, with bright green foliage that takes on beautiful autumnal hues ranging from yellow to red.

Cultivation and maintenance ๐ŸŒฑ

Nashi Shinseiki is remarkably hardy, withstanding temperatures down to -15ยฐC or even -20ยฐC, making it suitable for most French regions. It appreciates deep, well-drained and cool soils, with an acidic to neutral pH, but adapts to different types of soil, except for soils that are too calcareous, which can cause chlorosis.

For optimal cultivation, plant your Nashi Shinseiki in a sunny situation sheltered from the prevailing โ˜€๏ธ winds. Planting is ideally done in autumn for bare-root plants, allowing good rooting before spring. Staking for the first 3-4 years is recommended to ensure straight growth and protect the tree from high winds.

Pollination and associations

Although Nashi Shinseiki is self-fertile, the presence of other varieties significantly improves fruit production and quality. It is also an excellent pollinator for other nashis. To optimize your harvest, pair it with Nashi Kosui or Williams Yellow Pear, which are great pollination companions.

Disease ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ resistance

Nashi Shinseiki has good overall resistance to diseases, including scab, making it a good choice for gardeners who want to limit treatments. It is generally more resistant than traditional European pear trees. However, monitoring is still needed for aphids and codling moths, which can be controlled by biological methods such as the introduction of natural predators or the use of pheromone traps.

Harvesting and storage

The harvest of Nashi Shinseiki is carried out from mid-August, when the fruits have reached their characteristic yellow-green coloration. It is crucial to pick the fruit when ripe because, unlike European pears, nashis no longer ripen after picking. The fruit easily detaches from the tree when ready, but handle them with care as they are susceptible to shock.

Storage is one of the strengths of this variety: the fruit can be kept for 2 to 3 months in the refrigerator, in the vegetable drawer, while retaining its taste qualities. At room temperature, they will keep for about 2 weeks. For longer storage, place them in a cool, dry cellar with airy shelves.

Culinary ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Uses

Nashi Shinseiki is mainly eaten fresh and raw, ideally fresh out of the refrigerator to fully appreciate its thirst-quenching character. Its crunchy and juicy flesh makes it an excellent fruit to eat, but it also lends itself to many preparations:

  • In fruit salads to add crunch ๐Ÿฅ—
  • In pies and crumbles for a touch of originality ๐Ÿฅง
  • In light and refreshing compotes
  • As an accompaniment to sweet and savoury dishes
  • In fresh juice that is particularly thirst-quenching ๐Ÿฅค

An ornamental and productive tree

Beyond its fruity qualities, Nashi Shinseiki is a real ornamental asset for the garden. Its pinkish-white bloom in April is spectacular, transforming the tree into a cloud of delicate flowers. Its slightly weeping habit and flamboyant autumn foliage make it a prime subject for structuring an orchard, a fruit hedge or even on an isolated lawn. This dual function, both productive and decorative, makes it an ideal choice for gardens of all sizes.
