Description

Poirier Curé

The Poirier Curé, also called Poire du Curé or Belle du Berry, is an old French variety discovered in 1760 by the priest of Villiers-en-Brenne in the Indre. This exceptional storage pear is distinguished by its very elongated shape and its storage capacity until January.

Known for its remarkable hardiness, this traditional variety adapts perfectly to a variety of climates, including at altitude, making it a preferred choice for family orchards requiring reliable production.

Characteristics of the fruit

The pears of the Poirier Curé impress with their large size, measuring 9 to 12 cm in height and 6 to 8 cm in diameter. Their very elongated pear-shaped shape makes them immediately recognizable in the orchard.

The thin skin has a beautiful light greenish yellow colour, sometimes tinged with reddish or mottled with brown. The white, semi-melting, sweet and fragrant flesh reveals all its quality when cooked, making this pear a must for baked desserts.

Culinary Uses

Le Poirier Curé particularly excels in cooked preparations. These pears are perfect poached in red wine, in refined compotes or integrated into your autumn and winter pastries. Their flesh holds up well when cooked while developing complex aromas.

Tree Features

The tree is characterized by its exceptional vigour and distinctive, sometimes tortuous divergent habit, which gives it an original silhouette in the orchard. It can reach 4 to 5 meters in height with a wingspan of about 4 meters.

Its flowering in April offers delicate white flowers that beautify the orchard in spring. This strain proves to be very fertile once established, guaranteeing generous harvests year after year.

Cultivation and maintenance

The Curé Pear Tree adapts remarkably well to the various French climates , demonstrating a hardiness that makes it a safe choice even in regions with difficult conditions. Its tolerance to climatic variations makes it a particularly recommended tree for beginners.

As this variety is not self-fertile, combine it with the Williams Yellow Pear or the Doyenné du Comice Pear Tree to optimise pollination and guarantee abundant fruiting.

The harvest is carried out in October-November, and the fruits can easily be stored until January in a cool place, thus offering fresh pears all winter long. A simple cellar or a cool cellar is enough to enjoy this variety for several months.
