All about Peasgood’s Nonsuch Apple Tree

Peasgood’s Nonsuch Apple, also known as Fishgood’s Peerless and Goldreinette von Peasgood, is an heirloom English variety, highly prized for its very large apples and versatile use. Obtained by N. Peasgood in Stamford from a Catshad Codlin seedling, it has been on the market since 1872.

Characteristics of the fruit

The fruit is very large, weighing between 500 and 800 grams, with a diameter of 70 to 80 mm. It has a round, conical shape, homogeneous, with a smooth green-yellow epidermis that turns pale yellow when ripe, often tinged with bright carmine red on the sunny side. The flesh is white, slightly yellowish, fine, tender, juicy, pleasantly acidic and slightly aromatic.

Use of the fruit

The apple from the Peasgood’s Nonsuch apple tree is an excellent knife and culinary apple, also considered a luxury fruit for exhibitions. It is harvested in September and can be stored naturally until the beginning of November, although it is susceptible to certain diseases in a refrigerated environment.

Tree Description

Peasgood’s Nonsuch has medium to high vigour, with a frame adapted to shapes such as bush, oblique cords and spindle.

Growing Characteristics

  • Adaptation to the rootstock: Trees grafted on type 9 produce more beautiful fruit and have a better production.
  • Flowering: Mid-late.
  • Disease Susceptibility: Prone to canker, the fruits crack easily in rainy summers and are susceptible to moniliosis.
  • Driving: Good fertility and regular production.
