Description

Fishing Bénédicte

The Bénédicte peach tree is a modern variety selected in the Bouches-du-Rhône, which has become a must for gardeners who want to grow without chemical treatment. Its exceptional resistance to peach leaf curl makes it the benchmark for organic farming and family orchards. This self-fertile variety produces very large fruits of up to 200 grams, with melting, juicy and deliciously fragrant white flesh.

Recognized by arboriculture professionals as a reference variety for disease resistance, the Bénédicte peach tree combines hardiness, productivity and remarkable taste quality. It is the ideal choice for obtaining beautiful, tasty peaches without the usual processing constraints.

Characteristics of the fruit

Peaches Benedict are distinguished by their impressive size and superior taste quality. The velvety skin has a beautiful pink colouring on a greenish-yellow background, turning to intense red on the side exposed to the sun.

Disease resistance: the major asset

The Bénédicte peach tree is the reference variety in terms of resistance to blister. This fungal disease caused by the fungus Taphrina deformans is the main scourge of peach trees, but Bénédicte naturally resists it. Studies conducted by the GRAB (Organic Agriculture Research Group) confirm this exceptional resistance, making this variety a preferred choice for organic farming.

This natural resistance makes it possible to considerably reduce or even eliminate phytosanitary treatments. The tree also has a good general tolerance to other peach diseases.

Cultivation and maintenance

Planting conditions

The Bénédicte peach tree thrives in light, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It fears excess water and heavy, compact soil. Choose a sunny exposure, ideally sheltered from the cold north winds.

  • Planting period: November to March (frost-free)
  • Exhibition: Full sun, sheltered location
  • Soil: Draining, light, rich
  • Hardiness: -15°C to -20°C depending on the source
  • Adult height: 3 to 4 meters

Annual maintenance

The Bénédicte peach tree requires little maintenance thanks to its natural resistance. Bring compost in the fall to nourish the tree and strengthen its defenses. Mulching at the foot will keep the soil cool in summer.

Pruning is carried out at the end of winter (February-March), before bud break. It consists of aerating the centre of the tree, removing dead wood and shortening the branches that have fruited the previous year.

Pollination and associations

The Bénédicte peach tree is self-fertile : a single tree is enough to obtain an abundant harvest. However, the presence of other varieties of peach trees significantly improves yield and fruit quality through cross-pollination.

To diversify your orchard and stagger your harvests, combine the Bénédicte peach tree with the Amsden peach tree for early fruit from June, or the Queen of Orchard peach tree which will extend the season until September. You can also complete your collection with the Bergeron apricot tree to enjoy tasty apricots in July.

Harvesting and Use

The harvest of the Bénédicte peach tree takes place in mid-August, when the fruits are well coloured and give way slightly under the pressure of the finger. The peaches then give off their characteristic fragrance, a sign of optimal ripeness.

The melting and juicy white flesh of the Benedict lends itself to multiple uses:

  • 🍑 Fresh consumption : ideal for enjoying its exceptional flavour
  • 🥧 Pastries: pies , clafoutis, crumbles
  • 🍯 Preserves : jams, compotes, peaches in syrup
  • 🥤 Drinks : fresh juices, smoothies

Why choose the Bénédicte peach tree?

The Bénédicte peach tree combines all the qualities sought by demanding gardeners:

  • Exceptional resistance to blistering : culture without treatment possible
  • Very large fruit : impressive size up to 200 g
  • Superior taste quality : melting, sweet and fragrant flesh
  • Self-fertile : guaranteed production even planted alone
  • Good hardiness : suitable for many French regions
  • Late flowering : limits the risk of spring frost

This variety is the ideal choice for anyone who wants to grow quality peaches in an environmentally friendly way. To complete your organic orchard, also discover the Grosse Mignonne peach, a historic French variety also resistant to diseases, or the white vine peach for a later harvest in September.
