Description

Pêche Grosse Mignonne

The Grosse Mignonne peach tree, also called “Mignonne veloutée”, is a prestigious French variety that has more than fifty denominations, testifying to its extraordinary success over the centuries. This exceptional catch was already known at the time of Louis XIV, who was a great lover and had it cultivated in the gardens of Versailles by his gardener Jean-Baptiste de la Quintinie.

Dating from the seventeenth century, this ancient variety remains one of the best French peaches thanks to its exceptional taste quality and remarkable resistance to disease. It is a true French fruit heritage, a symbol of the French art of living.

Characteristics of the fruit

La Grosse Mignonne produces large, round fruits with a thin and delicate skin, yellow tinged with purple red on the sunstroke side, with a characteristic silky down. These peaches reveal an exceptional white flesh, colored red around the stone, with a melting texture that “literally melts in the mouth”.

The taste is of remarkable quality: very sweet, juicy and deliciously fragrant, with a subtle vinous flavour that this variety is famous for. The medium-sized pit is easily detached from the flesh, making it easier to eat and prepare for cooking.

Culinary Use

This exceptional peach excels in fresh consumption, where it reveals all the finesse of its aroma composed of more than 80 different molecules. Its firm flesh resists handling well, making it a perfect fruit for refined desserts : pies, compotes, jams, peach melba or homemade sorbets.

Its superior taste quality and beautiful presentation make it the fishing of choice for gastronomic preparations and artisanal preserves. It is also perfect for syrup preparations and fruit salads.

Spectacular flowering

🌸 The flowering of the Grosse Mignonne is a real spectacle in the garden. Its large, bright pink flowers appear as early as March-April, bringing an incomparable decorative note to the orchard. This early but abundant flowering ensures a generous production.

The peach tree is self-fertile, requiring no pollinators to fruit. A single tree is therefore enough to obtain a bountiful harvest, provided that temperatures exceed 8-10°C during flowering. If you want to diversify your orchard, you can combine it with the Amsden peach tree to spread out the harvests.

Resistance and hardiness

One of the great strengths of this variety is its exceptional resistance to diseases, including peach leaf curl, monilia and rust. This natural resistance greatly simplifies maintenance and makes environmentally friendly cultivation possible.

The tree has excellent hardiness (down to -15°C) and remarkable vigour, with rapid fruiting. Its resistance to insect attacks complements its exceptional agronomic qualities.

Cultivation and maintenance

The Grosse Mignonne peach tree thrives in a sunny exposure sheltered from the north wind. It prefers light, well-drained and humus-rich soils. This vigorous variety naturally forms a small tree 4 metres high with a harmonious spreading habit.

Very adaptable, it can be driven in the wind or trained against a south-facing wall. Its fast growth and high productivity make it an ideal choice for family orchards.

Planting Tips

Plant your Grosse Mignonne peach tree preferably in autumn (October to April) in bare roots, or all year round in containers. Choose a sunny location sheltered from cold winds, in a well-worked soil 40-50 cm deep.

Incorporate compost into the planting and create a watering basin. Mulching will preserve the freshness of the soil in summer and limit weeding. The tree will start producing in the 2nd or 3rd year.

Harvesting and storage

The harvest is carried out from mid-July to mid-August in several passes, allowing consumption to be staggered. Ripe fruits come off easily and give off their characteristic fragrance. They can be kept for a few days at room temperature or several weeks in the fridge.

This historic variety will guarantee you a royal taste experience, worthy of the greatest French tables. A real treasure of fruit heritage to cultivate in your garden to perpetuate the tradition of French excellence.
