Description
All about the Peloa Cherry Tree
The Peloa cherry tree is a heritage variety originating from Cambo-les-Bains, in the French Basque Country (64), which spread widely in Itxassou at the beginning of the twentieth century. This early cherry stands out as one of the first cherries to ripen in the Basque region, offering fruit of exceptional taste quality. The Peloa is an integral part of the Basque fruit heritage and contributes to the fame of Itxassou cherries.
Characteristics of the Peloa Cherry Tree
This cherry tree is characterized by its great vigour and spreading habit with branches with very open branches, which makes it easier to pick. Its mid-late flowering, usually at the end of March, offers a certain resistance to spring frosts, a significant advantage to ensure regular production.
The fruits are of medium size and have a characteristic kidney shape. Their thin skin is a very attractive purple to shiny black . The flesh is soft, melting and particularly juicy with a very dark and abundant red juice. The taste is mainly sweet with a very slight acidity, which makes it a cherry particularly appreciated in tasting. Its flavor is considered one of the best among early varieties.
Cultivation and maintenance
The Peloa cherry tree offers the advantage of a rapid fruiting and an abundant and regular production. However, it is sensitive to excessive rainfall during the ripening period, which can cause fruit to burst and promote the development of moniliosis. It is therefore recommended to plant it in well-drained soil and in an area relatively protected from heavy spring rains.
To optimize its production, pair it with other early to medium flowering varieties such as Burlat Cherry or Early Rivers Cherry. As with all cherry trees, avoid soils that are too wet, which can cause root asphyxiation.
Culinary Uses
Peloa cherries are versatile in the kitchen. They are excellent for fresh consumption thanks to their melting, juicy flesh and sweet taste. However, they are particularly popular for making traditional Basque jams , including the famous jam served as an accompaniment to local sheep’s cheese. Their abundant and colourful juice also makes them an excellent base for coulis, sorbets and pastry preparations.
History and heritage
The Peloa cherry tree is an important part of the fruit and cultural heritage of the Basque Country. Along with other local varieties such as Xapata, it contributes to the culinary identity of this region, especially during the annual cherry festival in Itxassou. By choosing to grow this heirloom variety in your garden, you are contributing to the preservation of a precious genetic and cultural heritage while offering you exceptional fruit from the month of May.
