Description

Poirier Jules d’Airoles

The Jules d’Airoles pear tree is a historic French variety obtained in 1836 by Lรฉon Leclerc de Laval and propagated by M. Hutin. This exceptional winter pear bears the name of Mr. Jules de Liron d’Airoles, a famous nurseryman of the nineteenth century. Known for its remarkable taste qualities, it is particularly appreciated by lovers of authentic pears.

This old variety has conical or pear-shaped fruits, slightly elongated and regular. The fruits are often produced in clusters, making them a productive and generous variety in the orchard.

Characteristics of the fruit

Jules d’Airoles pears are distinguished by their smooth and thick epidermis of a beautiful light greenish yellow. In terms of sun exposure, they develop a magnificent cheek washed with carmine red which gives them a particularly attractive appearance.

The flesh, at first firm and acidic after harvesting, evolves magnificently after a few weeks of storage. It then becomes semi-fine, very juicy and develops a very sweet and tangy flavour, sometimes slightly vinous depending on the year and the growing conditions.

Cultivation and maintenance

The Jules d’Airoles pear tree has a strong and vigorous growth, developing tall trees with a tight crown. It adapts particularly well to heavy and deep soils, where it expresses its full potential.

โš ๏ธ Be careful with light soils : in light and dry soil, the fruits can fall prematurely. It is therefore recommended to favor rich and well-drained but cool soils.

Growing Particularities

  • Thinning required : The variety develops a lot of small wood and requires severe thinning to obtain good-sized fruits
  • Storing short twigs : They are precious because they bear fruit
  • Pollination : Self-sterile, requires the presence of a pollinator. Warning: this strain produces low-quality pollen

Pollination and associations

As this variety is self-sterile, it absolutely requires the presence of a compatible pollinator. For optimal pollination, pair it with Conference Pear or Williams Pear.

๐Ÿ’ก Expert tip : Plant at least 2 different varieties of pear trees to ensure optimal fruiting. The Doyennรฉ du Comice and Beurrรฉ Hardy are excellent companions for this variety.

Harvesting and storage

The harvest takes place in November, when the fruit is easily detached from the tree. Pears must be harvested before full maturity to optimize their conservation.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Exceptional storage capacity : The fruits can be kept for 4 to 5 months in good conditions (cool cellar, refrigerator). This long storage allows these delicious pears to be enjoyed until March-April.
