Description

Poirier President Heron

The President Heron Pear is an old French variety obtained in Rouen in 1883 by sowing the seeds of Beurré d’Amanlis. Launched on the market by Arsène Sannier in 1894, this remarkable pear bears the name of Alexandre Héron, president of the Central Horticultural Society of the Seine-Inferior.

This little-known variety deserves special attention for its exceptional taste qualities and remarkable rusticity. Although its visual appearance is less attractive than other varieties, it more than makes up for it with a perfect taste that appeals to lovers of fine-fleshed pears.

Characteristics of the fruit

President Heron pears are distinguished by their large and homogeneous size (400g and more), often globular, ovoid or pear-shaped. Their epidermis has a characteristic tawny color that is evenly tanned in the sun, sometimes described as olive green with bronze-colored areas and dots.

The white flesh is remarkably fine, very juicy and very sweet. Well scented with a light spicy scent, it offers an exceptional melting texture with a barely perceptible acidity that perfectly balances the sweetness of the fruit.

Exceptional taste qualities

The President Heron pear tree produces pears of very good quality for the knife, known for their exceptional finesse. The tender, sweet and very juicy flesh develops a delicate, slightly spicy fragrance that is part of the charm of this variety.

🍐 Major asset : The finesse of its flesh is its absolute strength. When perfectly ripe, it offers an incomparable melting texture that delights lovers of authentic pears, more than offsetting its less attractive visual appearance.

Recommended Uses

  • Fresh tasting : Excellent table pear with fine flesh
  • Raw consumption : One of the best pears to chew
  • Kitchen : Perfect for fine culinary preparations
  • Baking : Ideal for desserts requiring fine flesh

Cultivation and maintenance

The President Heron Pear is a tree of medium vigour that develops a very erect habit, making it easier to drive in various forms. Its fast fruiting and strong, consistent productivity make it a popular choice for patient gardeners.

This variety has exceptional hardiness (resistant to -15°C) and very good resistance to diseases, especially fire blight. It adapts perfectly to all climates and is particularly recommended for growing at altitude.

Cultural requirements

  • Exposure : Full sun, well-ventilated location
  • Soil : Prefers light, rich and cool soils
  • Rootstock : Excellent affinity with quince
  • Forms : Can be grown in many forms

Grafting Particularities

Technical advantage : Unlike many varieties, the President Heron Pear has a good affinity with quince rootstocks. This compatibility improves its fertility and productivity.

Grafting on quince, it can withstand all soils and can be grown in many forms, offering great flexibility of use in the garden.

Pollination and associations

The President Heron Pear is partially self-fertile, capable of producing on its own, but its production is significantly improved by cross-pollination.

To optimize fruiting, combine it with the Williams pear tree or the Doyenné pear tree of the Comice. The Beurré Lebrun and Triomphe de Vienne are also excellent pollinators.

💡 Health advantage : This variety is not very prone to secondary flowering, which can be particularly appreciated in areas affected by fire blight.

Harvesting and storage

The harvest of the President Heron Pear is carried out over a relatively short period from the end of September to the very beginning of October. This concentration of the harvest facilitates management and allows for better storage organization.

📦 Exceptional storage : Pears keep remarkably well for 3 to 4 months in good conditions. This long shelf life allows for consumption spread out throughout the autumn and winter.

Storage tips

⚠️ Be careful with handling : This fruit is sensitive to shocks. Once damaged, it does not keep for long. Handle with care and harvest at the right time to optimize conservation.

Disease resistance

🛡️ Remarkable hardiness : The President Heron Pear is known for its very good resistance to diseases and its great hardiness. This natural resistance makes it a particularly suitable variety for organic cultivation.

Its resistance to fire blight and low susceptibility to common diseases make it a preferred choice for organic ecological gardens and professional orchards.

Professional Interest

🏢 Professional recognition : This variety sometimes finds its place in professional orchards that manage to enhance it despite its unattractive colour. Its regular productivity and hardiness are particularly appreciated by professionals.

The regularity of production and the absence of alternation make this variety a reliable choice for specialized commercial production.
