Description

Apple Tree Suzette

The Pommier Suzette, also called “Suzine”, is a very old variety native to the Gers and Béarn, mentioned as early as the seventeenth century (*Lou trimpe de la lengouo*). It produces small, rounded, very flattened apples with a bright blood-red complexion with stripes. The variety is renowned for its hardiness, its erect habit and its fragrant flowering in April :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}.

Characteristics of the variety

The fruits are small, hard, dense, very crunchy, sweet and fragrant. It is excellent raw, and perfect for pies because it gives little juice :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}. The harvest is done in two passes (early October and early November), and storage extends over 3 to 4 months:contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}.

Cultivation and maintenance

Several nurseries note its good vigour and its erect habit, adapted to rich, deep and well-drained soils. The flowering in April makes it a variety protected from late frosts :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}. It is naturally resistant to scab :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}.

Pruning is done at the end of winter to promote fruiting. Please note: this variety is self-sterile, it requires a compatible pollinator nearby.

Gastronomic uses

  • To eat: very fragrant and sweet apple, crunchy flesh.
  • In pastry: ideal for pies, tourtières, cakes because it gives off little juice.
  • Compotes: its dense texture remains pleasant even when cooked.
