The Marbled Reinette, sometimes called “Golden Cloth of the Dutch” or “Marbled Reinette of Auvergne”, is an old variety of the Massif Central or Normandy, dating back to the eighteenth century. It is renowned for its visual appeal – yellow-green skin mottled with reddish-brown and marked russet – and its gourmet taste combining sweetness and light acidity:contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}.
The fruits are medium to large in size, round to slightly conical in shape, often asymmetrical. The epidermis, strongly russeted, has brown mottling on a yellow-green background:contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}. The flesh is fine, firmly juicy, sweet-tart, with a complex and persistent fragrance :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}.
The harvest is in September, and the fruits reach full maturity after a few weeks in the cellar. They can be stored until March, sometimes April, depending on the storage conditions:contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}.
This tree is vigorous with balanced growth, with a semi-late flowering that limits the risk of spring frost. It is resistant to common pests and diseases :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}.
It prefers deep, cool, well-drained soils (even slightly calcareous), and a sunny exposure. Fruit setting is rapid, often as early as the 2nd year after planting :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}.
To promote a balanced habit, prune at the end of winter by removing dead wood and aerating the branches. Since it is self-sterile, it is imperative to plant a mid-late pollinator nearby:contentReference[oaicite:6]{index=6}.
