Description

Pear tree Buttered Superfine

The Superfine Buttered Pear Tree is an exceptional French variety, created in 1837 by Mr. Goubault, a horticulturist from Angers. This ancestral autumn pear is recognized as one of the best table pears thanks to its exceptionally melting flesh and delicate fragrance.

Awarded a medal in 1845 by the Comice de Maine-et-Loire, this hardy variety quickly established itself in French orchards for its remarkable taste qualities and its natural resistance to scab.

Characteristics of the fruit

The Beurrรฉ Superfin pear is distinguished by its irregularly turbinated shape, often belly and sometimes bumpy, giving it an authentic and rustic appearance. Medium to large in size, it can reach up to 350 grams for the most beautiful specimens.

Its thin and smooth skin has a magnificent golden yellow color dotted with brown-ochre dots, with delicious red reflections on the sunny side. The whitish flesh, fine and very melting, offers an exceptional texture, juicy and slightly grainy in the middle.

The subtle taste reveals a perfect balance between sweet sweetness and refreshing acidity, with delicately perfumed aromas that make it an exceptional tasting pear.

Tree Features

The Superfine Buttered pear tree has medium vigour with many branches. It reaches 3 to 4 meters in height, with a habit erected at the top that spreads towards the base. Its greenish-grey, slightly pinkish wood gives it a decorative appearance.

This hardy variety shows excellent resistance to scab, making it a preferred choice for organic gardens. Its middle flowering (March-April) is covered with pretty clusters of small white flowers.

Pollination and fruiting

The Superfine Buttered pear tree is partially self-fertile, but its production will be optimized by the presence of compatible pollinators nearby. Its middle flowering allows for excellent compatibility with many varieties.

For optimal pollination, combine it with the Lebrun Buttered Pear Tree, the Triumphe de Vienne Pear Tree, or the Conference Pear Tree. This cross-pollination guarantees successive and abundant harvests .

Harvesting and storage

๐Ÿ‚ The harvest takes place from September to October depending on the region and the exposure. It is essential to practice inter-picking to take full advantage of the aromas and avoid exceeding the stage of optimal ripeness.

Beurrรฉ Superfin pears have a relatively short shelf life of 1 to 2 months maximum. To optimize their preservation, pick them slightly before full maturity and store them in the refrigerator in the fruit drawer.

๐Ÿ’ก Storage tip: Keep a close eye on the colour of the fruit – as soon as it starts to turn yellowish, eat it quickly to enjoy its optimal melting texture.

Cultivation and maintenance

๐ŸŒฑ The Superfine Buttered pear tree thrives in sunny exposure, in rich, deep and well-drained soil. It prefers fairly heavy soils without excess limestone or humidity.

This variety is perfectly suited to training in low shapes (garden trees, trellised shapes), which makes it easier to care for and harvest in small spaces.

Planting and care tips

  • Planting: From November to March, except during frost periods
  • Exhibition: Sun in partial shade, sheltered from strong winds
  • Soil: Rich, deep, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral
  • Size: Soft pruning at the end of winter to aerate the branches
  • Watering: Regular in the first year, then in case of drought
