Description
Description of Winston Apple Tree
The Winston apple tree, formerly known as ‘Winter King’, is a variety obtained in 1920 and introduced to the market in 1935. Renamed ‘Winston’ in 1944, this apple tree produces apples with firm, crunchy, juicy and sweet flesh, making it an excellent choice for direct consumption and for various culinary uses.
Growing Conditions
‘Winston’ is an erect tree of a vigorous type. This variety is relatively unsusceptible to common diseases such as scab, powdery mildew, and canker, making it easier to care for and more attractive to growers. However, it requires good thinning to avoid the production of fruit that is too small. ‘Winston’ grows well in temperate climates and can be grown in a variety of soils, provided they are well-drained.
Benefits
- Excellent preservation: The fruits of ‘Winston’ ripen very late in the season and store well, providing a source of fresh apples during the winter.
- High resistance to diseases: Easy to care for thanks to its resistance to several major diseases.
- Culinary versatility: Ideal for fresh consumption as well as for cooking, thanks to its sweet flavor and crunchy texture.
