Description
Pluot Aprimira
Pluot Aprimira, also known as Miracot (MIRAbelle + apricot), is an exceptional hybrid fruit developed in 1994 at the Geisenheim Research Station in Germany. This revolutionary botanical creation is the result of the cross between the “Von Herrenhausen” mirabelle plum and the “Orangered” apricot tree, thus combining the best of both fruit worlds.
This self-fertile variety produces medium-sized fruits resembling small apricots, with a golden-yellow skin adorned with red spots. Its firm, juicy and extraordinarily fragrant flesh offers a unique flavour combining the sweetness of mirabelle plum with the intense aroma of apricot. The fruit is distinguished by its free stone that is easily detached from the flesh.
Characteristics of the Pluot Aprimira fruit
| Appearance | Description | Qualities |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Ovoid, the size of a small apricot | Medium gauge, very uniform |
| Color | Golden yellow with red | Attractive and appetizing appearance |
| Flesh | Yellow, firm and crunchy | Very sweet, highly aromatic |
โจ Unique feature: Aprimira has an extraordinarily intense fragrance reminiscent of apricot while retaining the characteristic sweetness of mirabelle plum. Its juice is particularly tasty and its texture remains firm even when fully ripe.
Origin and development – German innovation
๐ฉ๐ช Geographical origin: Pluot Aprimira was born in 1994 at the prestigious Geisenheim research station in Germany, located in the Rheingau wine region of Hesse. This applied research institution, founded in 1872, is recognized worldwide for its innovations in fruit growing.
This German creation represents a major breakthrough in the hybridization of stone fruits, demonstrating the excellence of European agricultural research. The development of Aprimira is part of a varietal improvement process aimed at creating tastier fruit that is better adapted to temperate climates.
Pollination and compatibilities
๐ฟ Major advantage: Aprimira is self-fertile, which means that it can produce fruit without requiring the presence of other pollinating varieties. This feature makes it an ideal choice for small gardens.
Recommended pollinators to optimize production:
- Excellent companion with the Bergeron Apricot tree
- Compatible with the Plum Mirabelle de Nancy
- Beneficial association with the Plum Reine Claude Dorรฉe
Cultivation and planting of Aprimira
๐ฑ Optimal growing conditions
Aprimira requires a very sunny exposure to fully develop its aromas. It adapts to a wide range of neutral, light, deep and well-drained soils. Avoid heavy, clay or calcareous soils that can compromise its development.
๐ Planting and Establishment
Planting is best done in autumn (October to December) outside of frost periods. Choose a location sheltered from the cold north winds, ideally near a south-facing wall.
๐ง Maintenance and watering
During the first three years, watering must be regular to keep the soil cool all summer long. Adding manure in the spring by scratching the surface promotes growth and fruiting.
Tree Features
๐ณ Habit and dimensions: The Aprimira is a medium-sized tree (3 to 3.5 metres at maturity) with a naturally flared habit, perfectly adapted to small gardens and confined spaces.
Resistance and hardiness:
- โ๏ธ Excellent hardiness (down to -20ยฐC)
- ๐ฆ Very good resistance to fungal diseases
- ๐ Natural resistance to pest attack
- ๐๏ธ Cold tolerant, suitable for northern regions
Harvesting and storage
๐ Harvest period: The harvest is from mid-August to early September, offering a long picking period. The fruits reach their optimal ripeness when they give way slightly under the pressure of the finger.
Storage and use:
- ๐ Storage: More than a week in the refrigerator
- ๐ฅง Excellent for fresh tasting
- ๐ฏ Perfect for jams and jellies
- ๐ง Ideal for pastry and desserts
- ๐ง Can be frozen after pitting
Fruiting and production
โฐ Rapid fruiting: Production begins in the 3rd year after planting. The tree reaches its full production around 5-6 years of age, offering abundant and regular harvests.
๐ Productive qualities: High and regular yield, not subject to alternation. The long harvest period allows consumption to be spread out and facilitates processing.
