Description

Golden Reinette apple tree

The Golden Reinette (or “Golden Reinette”) is an old variety native to the South-West (Lot-et-Garonne, Gironde) cultivated since the eighteenth century:contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}. It produces pretty little straw yellow apples, very fragrant and sweet, traditionally used for tourtières:contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}.

Characteristics of the variety

The fruits, of medium size, are globular and sometimes slightly ribbed or mottled with pink when insolated:contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}. The flesh is fine, juicy, white and very sweet with an intense fragrance :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}.

Harvested in September or October, the apple can be stored until March in good conditions:contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}. The tree is of medium vigour, very fertile, with rapid fruiting, with abundant and fragrant flowering:contentReference[oaicite:6]{index=6}.

The variety has good hardiness (down to –20 °C) and a natural resistance to late frosts and scab :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7}.

Cultivation and maintenance

Adapted to all types of well-drained soils (including poor soils), it prefers a sunny exposure:contentReference[oaicite:8]{index=8}. Deep watering promotes good recovery, and mulching is recommended during the first few years:contentReference[oaicite:9]{index=9}.

Pruning is done at the end of winter, but the tree is already very productive as soon as it is established. It is not very susceptible to diseases, ideal for organic management:contentReference[oaicite:10]{index=10}.

Gastronomic uses

To eat: sweet and tasty flesh, ideal for snacking.
In pastry: perfect for pies, tourtières and crisps:contentReference[oaicite:11]{index=11}.
Compotes and jams: rich in pectin, it offers an excellent texture.
