Description

All about the Pommier Jacques Lebel

The Pommier Jacques Lebel, also known as Chüechliapfel, Double des Vosges, Huileuse and Jakub Lebel, is an old French variety, obtained around 1825 by Mr. Jacques Lebel, nurseryman in Amiens. This variety is appreciated for its sweet and sour apples, which are excellent for baking and compotes.

Characteristics of the fruit

The fruit is very large (80 to 100 mm), with a flat shape and a regular, often irregular outline. The epidermis is smooth and thin, yellow-green in colour with a slight streak of red and finely dotted with grey. The flesh is juicy, firm and sweet, with a strong acidity before full ripeness.

Use of the fruit

Jacques Lebel is ideal for baking, especially for pies and compotes. It is also used for pectin extraction and for industrial uses. The apple is harvested in several passes from the end of August to the end of September and can be kept well until December, or even beyond in a cold room.

Description of the Jacques Lebel apple tree

The tree has a very strong vigour and can reach a large size with a spreading habit. It has short internodes and stocky branches, forming very straight and vigorous scions when grafted at ground level.

Growing Characteristics

  • Flowering: Median.
  • Disease Susceptibility: Moderately susceptible to canker, prone to scab and woolly aphids. Excellent vegetation quality, but very sensitive to fruit scab and not very sensitive to powdery mildew.
