Description
Nashi Shinko
Nashi Shinko is an exceptional Japanese variety of Asian pear, resulting from a natural cross between the “20th Century” and “Milky Way” varieties. Developed in 1941 in Niigata Prefecture in Japan, this late variety is distinguished by its large, round fruits weighing 400 to 600g with bronze-golden skin and refreshing white flesh.
Nicknamed “apple-pear” for its unique texture, Nashi Shinko perfectly combines the crunch of an apple and the juiciness of a pear. Its mild flavor with notes of honey and pineapple makes it a very popular fruit among gourmets and home gardeners.
Characteristics of the fruit
| Appearance | Taste | Conservation |
|---|---|---|
| Round fruits, bronze-golden | Sweet with hints of caramel | Excellent shelf life |
| Fine | Crunchy and juicy | 3-4 months in the fridge |
| Medium to large size (400-600g) | sugar/acidity balance | Keeps until the beginning of the year |
The white flesh of Nashi Shinko is particularly crunchy and juicy, with a fine texture that distinguishes it from European pears. Its deliciously sweet taste has a harmonious balance between natural sweetness and refreshing light acidity.
Cultivation and care of Nashi Shinko
The Nashi Shinko is an easy-to-grow Asian pear tree, particularly suitable for beginner gardeners. It is distinguished by its resistance to diseases, especially scab, and its ability to adapt to different types of soil.
๐ฑ Planting conditions
- Exhibition: Full sun to partial shade
- Soil: Well-drained, rich in organic matter
- Planting: Fall or early spring
- Spacing: 3-4 meters between trees
๐ Dimensions at maturity
The tree reaches a height of 3 to 5 meters with an erect and then spreading habit. Its wingspan usually equals its height, forming a beautiful, balanced silhouette in the garden.
๐ง Watering and maintenance
Although drought-resistant, regular watering during hot weather improves the quality of the fruit. Mulching at the foot keeps the soil cool and limits the need for watering.
Pollination and production
Nashi Shinko is partially self-fertile but produces more fruit with cross-pollination. To optimize your harvest, combine it with other varieties such as Nashi Kosui or Williams Pear which flower at the same time.
Its abundant bloom in April attracts many pollinators with its fragrant pinkish-white flowers. This variety is also an excellent pollinator for other nashis in your orchard.
Harvesting and culinary use
The harvest of Nashi Shinko is carried out from mid-September to October, when the fruits are still firm. Unlike European pears, nashis no longer ripen after picking and must be harvested when ripe.
