The Calabash Pear Tree with the Queen, also known as ‘Calabash of Belgium’ or ‘Wine Pear’, is an old variety whose origin is attributed to Donat Leclercq, a gardener in Tournai, around 1770. This pear is appreciated for its elongated pear-shaped shape, reminiscent of a gourd, and for its sweet and fragrant flesh, ideal for confectionery.
‘Calebasse à la Reine’ shows medium vigour with a slender development. It has a good grafting affinity with quince, although the variety also lends itself to being grown in tall stems. It is very fertile, with early and regular fruiting, but the fruits tend to drop easily and bleet from the heart if not picked in time.
Opting for the Calabash pear tree is ideal for growers and lovers of historic fruits and traditional varieties. Its ability to produce high-quality fruit makes it a valuable choice for those who specialize in the production of high-end confectionery or processed products. Its management requires special attention to the picking to avoid the bletting of the fruit, thus offering a rewarding challenge for experienced gardeners.
