Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Fig Tree

Some information to help you, you can also contact us.

The fig tree is ideally planted from March to April or from October to November, avoiding frost periods. Choose a sunny spot (south or south-west facing), preferably sheltered by a wall to protect it from cold winds.

The fig tree adapts to most soils but prefers a well-drained, fertile, sandy soil. In cold regions, being close to a south-facing wall will give it the extra warmth it needs for good fruiting.

A fig tree generally starts producing fruit between the 3rd and 5th year after planting. This waiting period is normal because the tree needs time to root well and develop.

To encourage early fruiting, make sure to:

  • Water well during the first 2 years
  • Apply a fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium in spring
  • Avoid overly severe pruning, which would delay fruiting

The choice of variety depends on your climate and your preferences:

For cold regions (northern France):

  • ‘Marseillaise’ (Blanquette): hardy down to -12°C
  • ‘Brown Turkey’: excellent cold resistance
  • ‘Noire de Caromb’: very hardy and productive

For warm regions (southern France):

  • ‘Violette de Solliès’: late production, excellent quality
  • ‘Goutte d’Or’: two-crop variety (2 harvests/year)
  • ‘Sucre Vert’: fruit from September to November

Fig tree care is simple but a few steps are essential:

Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first 2 years (1-2 times/week in summer)
  • Once established, the fig tree is well drought resistant
  • Avoid excess water, which can rot the roots

Fertilizing:

  • Apply a fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium in spring
  • Add well-rotted compost or manure in autumn
  • Avoid excess nitrogen, which favors foliage at the expense of fruit

Pruning:

  • Prune in late winter before growth resumes
  • Remove dead and badly oriented branches
  • Balance the branch structure without pruning too severely

Several causes can explain the lack of fruiting:

Age: If your fig tree is less than 3-4 years old, this is normal, so be patient.

Growing conditions:

  • Lack of sun (insufficient exposure)
  • Soil too wet or poorly drained
  • Unbalanced fertilizing (too much nitrogen)
  • Pruning too severe

Climate:

  • Variety not suited to your region
  • Late frosts that destroy young figs

Solutions: Check the exposure, improve drainage, adjust fertilizing and choose a hardy variety for your region.
